Grasping the concept for reading an analogue clock is far from instinctive. One of the main problems is that when the clock is between the hours, the hour hand is between numbers, which can create confusion. So the separation of each hour into differently coloured zones, makes it easier to understand at a glance what hour you are in. Then it is a relatively simple task to identify the minutes which are displayed on the outer circumference. Also making the length of the hands correspond closely to the position of the numbers, increases clarity
